The Mt Somers Marathon run will commence at Staveley Store, departing from outside the store runners will initially go west 1.8km up Boyds road before entering private property where athletes will follow private tracks to Sharplin Falls carpark. Runners will enter South Face track on left after shelter. A steep climb through Beech forest and then open country to Staveley hill at 1085m. At the junction of South Face route and Summit route runners will continue left as to follow the South Face route. Runners will follow the South Face route track past the Acland Shelter to the junction for the Bus Stop route and the Rhyolite Ridge track, runners will veer left and follow the Rhyolite Ridge on a steep descent to the Woolshed Creek carpark. NB Steep descent to carpark, caution needed!. At the carpark there will be a first aid and first drink station. There is also a drop box facility here, Competitors should carry adequate water and food for the run. Drinking water from back-country streams carries the risk of contracting Giardia or Cryptosporidium, competitors drinking water from the streams during the run do so at their own risk.
Athletes will then follow the 21km half marathon course from this point. There is a brief climb up to the coalmine. Following the track go over the stile then turn left following a fence line until reaching a four wheel drive track leading to Woolshed Creek hut. There will be a drink station at this hut. From Woolshed Creek Hut, there is a steady climb on the track to the 1170m summit (don’t forget to have a look around). It is mostly downhill from here. Descending down from the tussock, you will pass the Pinnacles Hut. Shortly afterward you will enter the Beech Forest which you will be in for the rest of the run. There is a crossing of Bowyers stream in this section. After reaching Dukes Knob where your number will be taken the track descends quickly down to the stream bed. Follow the track to Sharplin Fall carpark where there is another 5km or mostly off-road running, up a small hill and then its all downhill past the historic Staveley lime kilns and back to Staveley store for some well-deserved country fare!
There will be a number of marshalls on the course at key junction points, however runners should carry enough food and water for the duration of an entire mountain marathon. It is to be noted that this is a mountain marathon and changeable weather, steep ascents and descents, rocky technical running terrain, cold and hot conditions should be expected.
