Mission Mt Somers Half Marathon

Start time: 0800-0830 hours
Sharplin Falls Carpark cutoff: 1700 hours
The run commences at the Woolshed Creek car park, where you will immediately enter the sub-alpine track (the start will be in waves according to There is a brief climb up to the coalmine. Following the track, go over the stile then turn left following a fence line until reaching a four wheel drive track. Turn right onto the track which leads to Woolshed Creek Hut, about one-third of the way. There will be a drink station there (the only one for the run). Competitors should carry adequate water and food for the run.

Drinking water from back-country streams carries the risk of contracting Giardia or Cryptosporidium, competitor’s drinking water from streams during the run, do so at their own risk. From Woolshed Creek Hut, there is a steady climb on the track to the 1170m summit (don't forget to have a look around). It is mostly downhill from here. Descending down from the tussock, you will pass the Pinnacles Hut , then shortly afterward you will enter the Beech Forest which you will be in the rest of the run. There is a crossing of Bowyers Stream in this section.

After reaching Dukes Knob where your number will be taken the track descends quickly down to the stream bed. Follow the track to Sharplin Fall carpark where there is another 5km or mostly off-road running, up a small hill and then its all downhill past the historic Staveley lime kilns and back to Staveley store for some well-deserved country fare!

The shuttle is part of your entry fee which takes you to the start line at the Woolshed Creek carpark.

Rules and regulations:

  • Race cut off times will be strictly enforced.
  • Shoes and Gear should be treated for Didymo, Please check www.biosecurity.govt.nz/didymo
  • Bowyers Stream and Morgan Stream bridges have a loading limit of one person at a time, take the river crossing if you can’t wait. 
  • Runners must follow the marked track and as directed by officials. 
  • Do not drop rubbish. Dropping of rubbish is likely to prejudice the running of this event in the future and will be cause for instant disqualification. If you take it in please take it out! 
  • Runners are asked to respect the rights of other track users and show common courtesy. 
  • All runners must carry a day pack with the following compulsory equipment: (clothing must fit the competitor) 
  • Spare polypropylene/wool top and hat (unless worn), Waterproof jacket (unless being worn), Food and drink, First aid kit which must contain: a roll of 5cm width crepe bandage, a roll of 2cm strapping tape, 10 band aid strips, a triangular bandage, small scissors, a survival blanket and a map or screenshot of the area if they have not been through the run before. 
  • There will be spot checks to ensure compliance, no equipment, no race. 
  • Run time will be approximately 2-5 hours.



General Rules

  1. Athletes under 18 years must have a parent or guardian to sign entry form with/for them.
  2. All competitors with existing medical conditions that may affect them during the event must notify officials in writing before the event begins. The official doctor and any other official shall have the absolute right to withdraw any competitor they consider unfit to continue. Participation in the event constitutes consent by each competitor to receiving any medical attention that officials may consider necessary. 
  3. Race officials reserve the right to withdraw competitors from the course at any time, if in their opinion, personal welfare, or safety standards are at risk. Officials are there for your safety. Any instructions to competitors and support persons must be followed. 
  4. Race cut off times will be strictly enforced. 
  5. Race rules and instructions may be changed at any stage prior to the race. Athletes will be asked to confirm their agreement on race day during final registration. 

Late Registrations

Early Bird prices finish at 11:55pm on the 11th October 2024. After this date a $20 entry fee will be added to the entry.
Entries close on the 30th October 2024.

Refunds will not be given after 1 October 2024. All refunds prior to this date will incur a $20 administration fee. 

Registration on the day: There will be no entries taken on the day.  
        
Any competitor under the age of 18 must have their parent’s signature on the Race Waiver. This can be printed off the website or forms will be available to fill in at registration.
