Mission Mt Somers thanks

Tineka Johnstone - Thursday, November 09, 2017
Enduranz Events

Hi Mission Mt Somers entrant,

Firstly thank you to all that attended the Mission Mt Somers event. We were absolutely thrilled with the entry response this year and it completely exceeded our expectations when we first created this event. Both of us have full time jobs and young families, yet when we set out to create this race our number one aim before everything else was to give every athlete the best experience possible.

We are both somewhat perfectionists and were probably both left not completely satisfied with the result of how Saturday unfolded. We were most definitely tested by the sheer number of people.

We acknowledge that the course marking for the ten kilometre event wasn't quite up to standard - we could do with more water containers at the finish line and more portaloos at the start of the half marathon, and that bees do not particularly like heat and people! We will do our utmost to get these factors correct in 2018.

Other than that what a day! We truly hope you all enjoyed the scenery that is Staveley and Mt Somers. Anyone who completed any of the events should be very chuffed, in particular those that took on the half marathon and marathon events, those courses are tough!!

We look forward to seeing you all again on the 27 October 2018.

Kind Regards Glen Currie and Tineka Johnstone

HALF MARATHON ENTRIES
The half marathon entries are full. We have fitted those on the waiting list in as we have had cancellations, however there is still about 12 of you on the list. You are welcome to come on the morning and try your luck for a no-show, however your chances are slim, so please don't take out your frustrations on the rego staff.

HALF MARATHON REGO AND SHUTTLE
After registering please immediately head to the buses which will be located opposite Staveley Store. As each bus fills up it will depart immediately for the Woolshed Creek start line. It is important that all buses have departed by 7.45 am. We have six bus loads of people being transported into a very small DOC carpark so it is important that all people are on time for registration etc. Water is not available at Woolshed Carpark so make sure you pack what you need. If possible and to save yourself time it would be beneficial to register the night before at the Dubliner Bar in Methven, details are on the website.

The Half Marathon will start in waves to try and reduce congestion on the first section of single track. The waves will leave in the following order:
Open Men

Please use the designated paddock for parking. All roads are open as usual around Staveley and we need access for buses etc on the day so would appreciate if people could please park in the designated parking areas and follow parking marshals directions to prevent congestion.

SHOWERS
There are no showers available at Staveley, however there is a refreshing stream just up the road.

NO ATMS
Staveley is in the whops - there is only a cafe there. So please bring cash with you - Methven has an ATM.

REGISTRATION AND IMPORTANT INFO
We will be updating you with important info on our website - click here to check out registration, briefing and start times, information about aid stations, drop boxes, and all other important information. Please let us know if you have any questions.

MARATHON CUT OFF TIMES
The marathon consists of predominately technical single track, with a number of metres of vertical to climb - it is a challenging course. Be ready to add a couple of hours to your road marathon time, this is an adventure run! The average time for the marathon is 6.5 hours and the half is 4.5 hours. If you are running the marathon you must be at the half way point (Woolshed Creek car park) by 12:30pm to meet the cut-off. If you make this you are good to carry on. There is no cut off time for the half marathon - once you are on it, the only way out is by foot!

CASH PRIZES!
Marathon
Open Women winner $500 cash
Open Men winner $500 cash
** Cash prizes provided by Tavendale & Partners

Half Marathon
Open Women winner $250 cash
Open Men winner $250 cash

$200 bonus to the fastest half marathon individual who can break 2 hours!

ARE YOU FITTER THAN LAST YEAR?
If you ran the race last year, there is a prize up for grabs for the athlete that shaves the most time off their last years time.

TRANSFER FROM FULL TO HALF MARATHON
If you're not quite as fit as you'd hope to be, we are happy to transfer your entry from the full to half marathon - or vice versa if you want to upsize to the marathon.

WAVE STARTS AT THE HALF MARATHON
Due to the increase in numbers for the half marathon, and the bottleneck at the start of the race, you will self seed and start in waves.

DOC CONSENT
DOC (Department of Conservation) do a primo job keeping our tracks and facilities prime for our recreation, and we are stoked with their support to get our ten year consent completed. However this does mean that we have restrictions in terms of numbers we are allowed on the track....we are stoked to announce that we are getting near our limit so if you know anyone still wanting to enter the full or half, we suggest they enter now so they don't miss out.

WILD THINGS NZ TRAIL RUNNING CLUB
We are chuffed to have partnered with the Wild Things NZ Trail Running Club who are helping us promote our Mission Mt Somers race to a wider audience. 5KM RACE
We have decided there are a lot of aspiring runners out there who would like to give off-road running a go so we have created a 5km race. This race will go off-road, through streams and down farm tracks. Great for kids of all ages and those adults just wanting to get off the couch and have a go.

WIN $200 IN THE HALF MARATHON
Glen has generously offered $200 for the fastest athlete to break the 2 hour mark in the 21km half marathon. Can you do it?

ARE YOU FITTER THAN LAST YEAR?
If you ran the race last year, there is a prize up for grabs for the athlete that shaves the most time off their last years time.

SHUTTLE FOR THE HALF MARATHON
Due to parking issues, the shuttle is compulsory this year and part of your 21km entry fee. The shuttle leaves from the Staveley Hall (registration) from 0715 - 0745 and delivers you to the start line. We will have drop boxes for your gear that will return to the finish line.

NEWSLETTER #1

14/10/15

A couple of points to note:

  • 42km marathon - there will be a drop box facility at Woolshed Creek carpark. This will enable you to have a second bag of supplies for the second half of the marathon, however you must still have the compulsory equipment in this bag. You must also clearly label this bag so you will know which one is yours at our aid station.
  • 21km half marathon - competitors that are not on the shuttle - due to limited space at Woolshed Creek carpark, the half marathon car park is approximately 2kms from the start line. For those getting dropped off there is a turn-around facility at the start line (but no parking). If you have already entered, but forgot to book the shuttle, please email info@enduranzevents.co.nz. Please note that it takes 20 minutes to drive from Staveley to the start of the half marathon. The shuttle will leave Staveley Hall at 0800.
  • When you enter you will automatically go into your appropriate age category: Youth (U18), Open (18-39), Veteran (40-49), Classic (50+) (DOB as at 31/10/15). However the prizes will be better in the Open Category so if you think you have a crack at winning the Open title but fall out of the age bracket, please email info@enduranzevents.co.nz and we can swap your category.
  • The 10km course can be walked, but there is no separate category for walkers.
  • Drink stations at Woolshed Creek carpark (marathon), Woolshed Creek hut, and just past Sharplin Falls carpark.

    42km: Fastest 5 hours, slowest 9 hours

DOC has cleared any post winter debris and the track is currently in an awesome dry condition for this time of year. All courses take in some areas of private land which makes this race even more awesome, however we ask that you respect the landowners and wait until race day to run through these areas.

We are getting really excited about the race, all is coming together nicely. All we need now is for the sun to shine and the All Blacks to make the final on November 1st and it should be a perfect weekend!!!!
